What is Cord Blood Banking?

Cord blood banking is the process of collecting and storing cord blood (blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following birth) in an outside facility for future medical use. Collection and processing of cord blood

Cord blood can be collected in 5 minutes, irrespective of the type of delivery (vaginal or cesarean). This is done using either a syringe or a bag pre-labeled with a number unique to your baby. Blood is drawn from the umbilical cord with the syringe or it may be elevated to drain the blood into the bag. It is important that cord blood is collected during the first 15 minutes following delivery. The blood is then processed and stored in a laboratory (blood bank) within 48 hours.
